Nigeria Labour Congress seeks N70,000 transport allowance
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kebbi State has proposed a minimum monthly transport allowance of N70,000 for public sector workers. NLC state chairman Murtala Usman stated the proposal aims to alleviate financial pressure caused by rising commuting costs and would apply to teachers, local government employees, health workers, and other civil servants.
In a separate development regarding national labour relations, veteran leaders have intervened to resolve a rift between the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). The disagreement stems from a recent agreement with the federal government concerning the N70,000 transport allowance. While the NLC maintains the amount is a starting point for further negotiations regarding the minimum wage, veteran leaders, including former NLC President Ayuba Wabba, have called for an end to public altercations to maintain worker unity.
