Nigeria Lagos Alakija Building Collapse Highlights Regulatory Failures

A three‑storey shopping complex in the Alakija area of Lagos collapsed, killing nine people and leaving 27 rescued by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and other responders. Environmentalist Philip Jakpor, executive director of the Renevlyn Development Initiative, attributed the disaster to persistent regulatory failures, use of substandard building materials and weak enforcement of construction standards. He warned, “Nigeria will continue to witness building collapses unless authorities prioritise compliance with standards and quality assurance measures.”

The incident has prompted civil‑society groups such as the Thrivescape Initiative to call for a proactive, coordinated approach to building safety, urging the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development and the Building Control Agency to strengthen inspections, provide free advisory services and shift urban planning from a revenue function to a public‑safety priority.
