Nigeria launches $100m South-east gas pipeline project
President Bola Tinubu has announced the commencement of a $100 million gas distribution pipeline project aimed at driving industrialization and economic growth across Nigeria's South-east region. Implemented through the South East Development Commission (SEDC), the 400-kilometre pipeline network is designed to connect gas resources to major industrial and commercial hubs in Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi states.
The project targets an estimated demand of 254 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, with approximately 150 potential customers already identified. By providing a more reliable and cost-effective energy source, the initiative seeks to reduce the region's heavy reliance on expensive diesel generators, thereby supporting manufacturing clusters in Aba, Nnewi, and Onitsha, as well as agro-processing in Ebonyi.
Speaking through Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, the President emphasized that the prosperity of the South-east is integral to Nigeria's national economic success. The project aligns with the administration's goal of building an integrated regional economy through strategic infrastructure that transcends political boundaries.
