Nigeria gas infrastructure development
Overview
Nigeria is advancing multiple gas infrastructure initiatives at both the international and regional levels. On the continental stage, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) connecting to Algeria, designating it as the “primary viable solution” for supplying the Sahel and global markets over Morocco’s Africa-Atlantic Gas Pipeline initiative. To support this, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has secured four final investment decisions to increase extraction capacity, with a connection project in Aoulef scheduled for June 2026.
Domestically, President Bola Tinubu has announced the commencement of a $100 million gas distribution pipeline project implemented through the South East Development Commission (SEDC). This 400-kilometre network is designed to connect gas resources to major industrial and commercial hubs in Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi states.
The project targets an estimated demand of 254 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, with approximately 150 potential customers already identified. By providing a more reliable and cost-effective energy source, the initiative seeks to reduce the region's heavy reliance on expensive diesel generators, supporting manufacturing clusters in Aba, Nnewi, and Onitsha, as well as agro-processing in Ebonyi. Speaking through Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, the President emphasized that the prosperity of the South-east is integral to Nigeria's national economic success.
