Nigeria launches national LPG program to reach 10 million homes

The Nigerian Federal Government has launched its National Grassroots LPG Penetration Programme, starting with a rollout in Akwa Ibom State. The initiative aims to provide clean cooking gas to over 10 million Nigerian households by 2060, with a target of reaching five million homes by 2030. The program utilizes a Depot–Hub–Node cylinder exchange model designed to place refill points within one to two kilometers of local communities.

In Akwa Ibom, the initial phase involves the distribution of 27,000 filled LPG cylinders to women and vulnerable households. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, noted that the program is part of the Decade of Gas Initiative and President Bola Tinubu’s vision to leverage gas resources for economic prosperity and healthier homes.

Complementing this federal effort, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno announced a state-level plan to empower 110,000 women through cooperative societies by October 2026. The Governor stated that the state initiative is designed to work alongside the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Initiative to support small and medium-sized enterprises and improve social welfare.
