Nigeria launches nationwide LPG programme in Bayelsa, targeting 5 million homes by 2030

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas) and the Decade of Gas Initiative, inaugurated the National Grassroots LPG Penetration Programme (NGLPP) in Bayelsa State. The pilot rollout in Yenagoa distributes 27,000 LPG cylinders and marks the start of a state‑by‑state expansion aimed at reaching five million households by 2030, with an annual target of one million new users.

Coordinating Director Ed Ubong highlighted the programme’s design, which includes cylinder recirculation, digital monitoring, safety education and local refill centres. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) Ekperikpe Ekpo linked the effort to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing cleaner cooking, reduced reliance on firewood and charcoal, improved public health, lower greenhouse‑gas emissions and new economic opportunities in the LPG value chain. Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri praised the initiative as a bold step toward delivering the benefits of the nation’s oil and gas resources to local communities.
