Nigeria military faces IED fatalities in Sokoto and rescues 47 hostages in Borno

Three Nigerian soldiers were killed when an improvised explosive device detonated beneath their vehicle during a security response to a bandit attack in the Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The soldiers were buried at Giginya Barracks with remarks from Deputy Governor Idris Muhammad Gobir, who called for better patrol equipment and mine‑detection technology for troops operating in the region.

In a separate operation in the Lake Chad region, troops from Operation Hadin Kai rescued 47 people, largely women and children, from an Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) enclave in Kangarwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State on June 20. The acting military information officer, Capt. Mohammed Goni, said the rescue resulted from intensified ground and air assaults that forced the insurgents to abandon their positions. The freed captives are receiving medical care and humanitarian support as the army continues its offensive against remaining ISWAP cells.
