Nigeria-Morocco pipeline project endorsed by ECOWAS

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has formally endorsed the Nigerian-Moroccan offshore pipeline project. This $25 billion megaproject is scheduled to begin construction in 2028 and will span over 4,000 kilometers along the West African coast.

The pipeline is designed to supply the European Union with 30 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas annually. While this volume represents approximately one-fifth of the gas previously supplied by Russia to the EU, it is expected to be more cost-effective than the liquefied natural gas (LNG) currently imported from the United States.

Energy expert Charles Majomi noted that the project signals a shift from traditional models where gas is extracted from African nations, processed abroad, and then resold to the continent at significantly higher prices. The project is expected to strengthen economic ties between Nigeria and the EU, potentially increasing Western influence within the ECOWAS bloc.
