Nigeria National Peace Committee warns of election-related incidents
The National Peace Committee (NPC) has raised alarms regarding rising misinformation, political intimidation, and violence ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. In a statement signed by Chairman Abdulsalami Abubakar and Co-convener Matthew Kukah, the committee reported that its Election Security Information Hub recorded 60 election-related incidents between August 19 and September 19.
Misinformation and disinformation were identified as the most prevalent issues, accounting for 40 per cent of the recorded cases. Other reported incidents included attacks on political activities and assets (21.7 per cent), political intimidation and threats (16.7 per cent), and political violence or thuggery (10 per cent). The committee also noted instances of inflammatory statements, restrictions on freedom of expression, intra-party conflicts, and voter inducement.
The NPC stated that these developments deviate from the peaceful campaign standards established by the National Peace Accord signed on August 18. The committee warned that such incidents could restrict political participation and erode public confidence in the electoral system, urging security agencies to conduct prompt and impartial investigations into electoral offenses.
