Nigeria NCC introduces device registration system to block unapproved phones
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has launched the Device Management System (DMS) to register and authenticate SIM-enabled devices. This initiative utilizes a Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) to track International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers, allowing regulators to distinguish between compliant equipment and unapproved devices.
Under the new framework, mobile networks will restrict or block access for devices that have not obtained the required type approval. The NCC is working with the Nigeria Customs Service, manufacturers, and importers to ensure compliance. The system is also designed to help authorities identify illegally imported equipment and block stolen devices reported by owners.
Users of certain imported or grey-market devices have already begun receiving alerts warning of potential disconnection after 30 cumulative days of non-compliance. While the enforcement has caused concern among owners of various brands, including iPhone, Infinix, Tecno, Oukitel, and Google Pixel, the NCC stated the exercise does not target any specific brand or model but aims to ensure all devices operating on national networks meet regulatory standards.
