Nigeria officials advocate intelligence-led security and community partnerships

Nigerian officials are advocating for a shift toward intelligence-led and community-centered security strategies to address evolving national threats. Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has called for a transition from reactive security management to preventive, collaborative governance. Speaking during a visit from the Defence Intelligence College, Oborevwori emphasized that intelligence must be converted into timely decisions and measurable outcomes to protect critical assets in the Niger Delta.

Simultaneously, at the African Borderlands Research Network conference in Lagos, Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap highlighted the need for integrated border management. Tunji-Ojo urged for border communities to be treated as active partners in security rather than just populations requiring protection. Nandap noted that the NIS is accelerating the use of digital identity systems, automated controls, and intelligence-led surveillance to combat human trafficking, terrorism, and organized crime while maintaining legitimate cross-border trade.
