Nigeria community-based security initiatives

Nigerian officials and community leaders have emphasized the importance of collaborative, community-centered strategies to enhance national security.

In Lagos, local leaders in the Agbado-Oke-Odo area held a workshop focused on strengthening community resilience. Participants identified pillars such as shared vigilance, youth engagement, and local intelligence as essential for grassroots policing and effective cooperation with security agencies.

Expanding this focus to a national level, officials at the African Borderlands Research Network conference advocated for a modernized approach to border security. Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap highlighted the need for integrated border management, urging that border communities be treated as “active partners in security” rather than just populations requiring protection. To support this, the NIS is accelerating the use of digital identity systems, automated controls, and intelligence-led surveillance to combat human trafficking, terrorism, and organized crime while maintaining legitimate cross-border trade.

At the state level, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has called for a transition from reactive security management to “preventive, collaborative governance.” Following a visit from the Defence Intelligence College, Oborevwori emphasized that intelligence must be converted into timely decisions and measurable outcomes to protect critical assets in the Niger Delta.
