Nigeria opposition faces fragmentation ahead of 2027 election
Nigeria’s opposition parties face significant challenges in attempting to unite behind a single candidate for the 2027 presidential election. While the Ibadan Declaration previously signaled a commitment to a unified front to avoid the fragmentation seen in 2023, recent political realignments have complicated these efforts.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed a list of presidential candidates, including incumbent President Bola Tinubu. Major opposition figures are currently pursuing separate platforms: former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is the candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while Peter Obi is running with Rabiu Kwankwaso under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Despite these divisions, some political figures, such as Allied Peoples Movement (APM) chieftain Oluwaseun Adeloro, argue that a coalition remains possible before the election. Adeloro suggested that the opposition could still consolidate to challenge the current administration, though he noted that major contenders like Obi and Abubakar may be unwilling to withdraw their individual ambitions.
