Nigerian opposition unity efforts for 2027 elections

The G100, a group of Nigerian stakeholders and opposition parties, is organizing a unity summit to foster political coordination ahead of the 2027 general elections. The initiative seeks to produce a single presidential candidate to provide a viable alternative to the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Consultations have involved leaders from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP). Organizers have emphasized that building a credible opposition requires “sacrifice, compromise and a willingness to place the larger interests of the country above narrow partisan or individual considerations.”

As of August 2026, the proposed Summit of Opposition Political Parties has been rescheduled from August 18 to August 31, 2026. This delay is intended to allow participating parties to conduct further consultations following the National Peace Summit. The G100 has reportedly held substantive discussions with the leadership of six opposition parties and members of the House of Representatives' Minority Caucus.

As the 2027 campaign period approaches, major parties are intensifying grassroots mobilization. Prominent figures involved in the political landscape include Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso. The G100 maintains that a fragmented opposition will be unable to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC), stressing the necessity of a structured and unified front.
