Nigeria opposition parties demand action over campaign attacks

Opposition political parties in Nigeria are increasing pressure on the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government to address a rising trend of attacks on campaign trails and candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Recent incidents include the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, being prevented from entering Yelwata in Benue State by individuals wielding sticks. The state government attributed the disruption to security risks and a failure to notify Governor Hyacinth Alia of the visit. In Kaduna State, suspected thugs attacked an African Democratic Congress (ADC) campaign event, prompting police to use tear gas to maintain order.

Critics have raised concerns regarding the moral direction of the political landscape, noting instances of impunity and the prioritization of victory over humanitarian considerations. These developments have led to warnings that the escalating violence could threaten the stability of the upcoming polls, which are scheduled to begin in January 2027.
