Nigeria pension reforms drive massive savings and disbursements

In Nigeria, digital reforms and verification exercises are significantly impacting pension administration. In Ondo State, the AI-enabled Human Resources and Payroll Platform, Ondo Pay, has processed approximately ₦9.7 billion in pensions and gratuities for 2,802 beneficiaries. This system has helped resolve outstanding obligations dating back to 2015 by replacing fragmented, paper-based records with centralized, audit-backed workflows.

On a federal level, the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) reported significant savings through payroll verification. By removing 20,089 unverified pensioners from its payroll, the directorate reduced monthly pension expenditures by approximately ₦750 million. PTAD is currently conducting further mop-up verification exercises across the country to ensure the integrity of the pension database.
