Overview
Following calls from retiring civil servants for pension system reforms and increased living wages, the Nigerian Federal Government has pledged to settle a 20-year backlog of unpaid entitlements for disengaged workers.
Dr. Dasuki Arabi, Director-General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR), announced that a verification exercise is currently underway in Gombe State to identify legitimate claims, including those of legal heirs to deceased workers. This process has reportedly received approval from President Bola Tinubu and involves collaboration with the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and anti-corruption agencies. The BPSR stated that over 99 per cent of cases regarding unpaid entitlements have already been resolved.
In addition to addressing arrears, retired officials have advocated for broader civil service reforms, including more transparent promotion systems, merit-based recruitment, and increased consultation with retirees on welfare policies to prevent future payment delays.
