Nigeria Police Force bans officers from TikTok, Facebook and other social media

Inspector‑General of Police Olatunji Disu issued an internal circular on 22 June 2026 prohibiting all Nigeria Police Force personnel from creating, posting or monetising content on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and similar services while identifying themselves as police officers. The order bars officers from sharing videos, photographs, live streams or skits in uniform or on police premises without written approval, from operating personal or anonymous accounts for entertainment or commercial gain, and from commenting publicly on investigations, deployments, promotions or disciplinary matters. Violations may result in interdiction, salary forfeiture, demotion, dismissal and possible criminal prosecution. Senior commanders are held vicariously liable for offences committed by subordinates, and must ensure compliance within seven days and submit reports within 14 days. The Force Intelligence Bureau and the Professional Standards (X‑Squad) are tasked with monitoring platforms and enforcing the policy. The directive reiterates earlier 2020 guidance on social‑media conduct and is presented as a measure to preserve institutional integrity and public trust.
