Nigeria security forces respond to widespread kidnapping and abduction incidents
Nigeria is facing a surge in kidnapping incidents across multiple states. In Imo State, security forces have located a suspected hideout for 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members abducted on October 1 along the Owerri-Onitsha Road. However, a direct raid has been delayed because intelligence indicates the camp is mined with improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Police are preparing to deploy heavy equipment, including bulldozers and armored personnel carriers, to facilitate a safe rescue.
In Benue State, 18 kidnap victims were released following the payment of an N8 million ransom and the provision of foodstuffs. The victims had been held for six days in a rocky forest terrain.
In Abia State, police recovered at least 28 human skulls and other bones from criminal hideouts in the Umuaku and Nneato forests during recent raids. Suspects managed to flee before arrests could be made.
Separately, the Nigerian Army reported rescuing 15 victims during operations in Edo, Kaduna, Benue, Kogi, and Plateau states. These operations also resulted in the arrest of two suspects in Kaduna and the recovery of stolen cattle and illegal petroleum products.
