Nigeria police retirees announce indefinite protest over pension disputes
The Police Retired Officers Forum of Nigeria (PROF) has announced an indefinite national peaceful protest scheduled to begin on September 29. The action follows the failure of previous assurances from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji R. Disu, to resolve long-standing pension grievances.
Retirees are demanding that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assent to legislation that would remove the Nigeria Police Force from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) and establish a separate, government-funded defined-benefit pension structure. The dispute centers on whether the federal budget should bear the cost of a dedicated police pension model versus improving benefits within the existing contributory system.
Separately, stakeholders at the 2026 National Pre-Retirement Summit in Abuja highlighted broader systemic risks to retirement security in Nigeria. Participants, including representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, cited rising inflation and inadequate benefits as primary threats to retirees, urging workers to seek multiple income sources to mitigate rising living costs.
