Nigeria police thwart July 7 cult initiation, arrest 135 suspects

The Lagos State Police Command conducted coordinated raids on the July 7 cult initiation ceremonies, arresting 135 suspected cult members and seizing a cache of weapons and other items. Commissioner of Police CP Tijani Fatai said the operation recovered "15 locally-made Beretta pistols, one English-made Beretta pistol, one locally-made revolver, eight other locally-fabricated firearms, nine battle axes, seven machetes, illicit drugs, alcoholic drinks, mobile phones and assorted charms" and emphasized the force's intent to stop cult-related violence.

In the neighbouring Ondo State, the police deployed tactical teams to prevent any July 7 cult celebrations. The command warned that gatherings, processions or any display of cult insignia would be forbidden and urged venue owners and parents to deny support to criminal groups. Violators face arrest and prosecution, the police statement added.
