Nigeria Police Under Scrutiny After Abuse Allegations in Imo and Lagos Cases

Human rights advocates have petitioned the Inspector‑General of Police over the alleged arbitrary arrest and detention of two Imo State residents, Engr. Leonard Uzoma and Ndubuisi Uchehara. The men say they were seized by the Force Intelligence Department at the behest of estate developer Michael Igbo following a dispute over an electricity transformer. The petition details claims of physical assault, tear‑gas use and humiliation, and calls for investigation and accountability.

In a separate case, the Federal Government has moved to prosecute police officers accused of involvement in the 2015 disappearance of Lagos businessman John Anozie. After a Federal High Court order, the police forwarded the original investigation file to the Attorney‑General’s office. The court also directed the IG of Police to arrest the identified officers and compensate Mrs. Nnena Anozie for rights violations. The forwarded documents include the investigation report and related evidence, paving the way for possible prosecution.

Both incidents highlight ongoing concerns about police conduct in Nigeria and the pursuit of legal remedies through the courts and oversight bodies.
