Nigeria powers 50,000 residents with 23 new solar mini‑grids
The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Rural Electrification Agency in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme and funded by the Global Environment Facility, has completed 23 solar‑powered mini‑grid projects. The installations are now supplying electricity to about 50,000 people, more than 20,000 households, and supporting businesses, schools, health centres and agricultural processing facilities in remote rural areas.
Power Minister Joseph Tegbe said the mini‑grids are part of a broader shift toward renewable energy, noting that solar, hydro and wind are now integral to Nigeria’s power architecture and highlighting the country’s first 200‑megawatt solar farm. He pledged continued expansion of off‑grid solutions and affirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improve electricity delivery before the end of the year.
