Nigeria prioritizes Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline over Morocco project
Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) to Algeria, a move that prioritizes the TSGP over Morocco’s Africa-Atlantic Gas Pipeline (AAGP) initiative. During the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) summit in Russia, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Gas Resources, Ekperikpe Ekpo, identified the TSGP as the primary viable solution for supplying the Sahel region and global markets.
Nigeria is currently executing its roadmap by deploying a pipeline network from south to north to integrate with Algerian infrastructure. A connection project is scheduled to begin in Aoulef by June 2026. To support this, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has secured four final investment decisions with international companies to increase extraction capacity.
In contrast, the Nigeria-Morocco AAGP project, which aims to connect 13 African countries, has faced scrutiny. While the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) previously highlighted the AAGP as a major initiative for regional energy connectivity and economic development, critics have pointed to the technical and financial complexities of the Moroccan-led route.
