Nigeria public servants begin three-day nationwide warning strike

Public sector unions in Nigeria, under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), have initiated a three-day nationwide warning strike. The industrial action commenced at midnight on Friday, October 2, 2026, and is scheduled to continue through Sunday, October 4, 2026.

The strike affects employees at the federal, state, and local government levels. It was triggered by the government's failure to address a list of demands submitted to President Bola Tinubu on September 21, 2026, following the expiration of a September 30 deadline.

Key worker demands include reducing the pump price of petrol to 500 naira per litre, granting an immediate wage award, and commencing negotiations for a new national minimum wage intended for 2027. The JNPSNC cited worsening economic and mental hardship as the primary drivers for the mobilization.
