Nigeria pushes for mandatory CNG adoption in commercial transport

Ismael Ahmed, Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PI-CNG&EV), has proposed making the transition to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mandatory for commercial vehicles in Nigeria. Highlighting that commercial vehicles constitute 55 to 60 per cent of Nigeria’s estimated 12 million vehicles, Ahmed argued that prioritizing this sector could significantly lower transportation costs and reduce reliance on petrol and diesel.

In support of these energy transition efforts, the Lagos State Government has received 20 high-capacity CNG buses through the presidential initiative. Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, stated that the new buses are intended to improve commuter capacity and comfort while fostering a more sustainable transportation system. The state government expressed appreciation for the federal initiative and encouraged private sector investment in CNG infrastructure, maintenance, and fleet management.
