Nigeria pushes renewable energy to power digital and power infrastructure
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to integrate renewable energy with telecommunications infrastructure. The partnership will share geospatial and Universal Service Provision Fund data to identify underserved areas, explore powering base stations and fibre sites with off‑grid renewable projects, and encourage co‑location of telecom equipment on REA energy assets.
The North East Development Commission (NEDC) announced a 100 billion‑naira allocation for a 50 MW power grid covering 102 local government areas in the region, alongside plans for over 30 billion naira in boreholes, solar street lighting for more than 100,000 lights, road and bridge construction, and the provision of medical imaging equipment. Both initiatives aim to improve electricity access, digital connectivity, and economic activity across Nigeria.
