Overview

In late July 2026 Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA) intensified its multi‑partner effort to expand power and digital services in underserved areas. On 22 July the agency renewed a one‑year AI‑analytics partnership with German firm VIDA place GmbH to map communities and feed socio‑economic data into the $750 million World Bank‑funded programme targeting 17.5 million new electricity connections.

At the same event REA announced additional milestones: fifteen Nigerian universities are now fully powered by dedicated solar farms under its Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale‑up (DARES) programme; more than 1,000 mini‑grids have been deployed, including 48 interconnected projects with distribution companies; a nationwide mapping exercise has catalogued over 750,000 communities for future renewable‑energy interventions; and the agency is securing private‑sector financing through multiple memoranda of understanding with banks.
