Nigeria Reaffirms IMF Partnership as IMF Calls for Data Transparency and Reforms

The Nigerian federal government reaffirmed its long‑standing partnership with the International Monetary Fund at a farewell dinner in Abuja, honoring outgoing IMF Resident Representative Dr. Christian Ebeke for his role in supporting fiscal, debt‑management and foreign‑exchange reforms during a critical phase of the country’s economic transition.

At the same time, IMF officials addressed a panel at the ASIS 2026 summit in Lagos, urging Nigeria and other African states to improve macro‑economic stability, productivity and the quality and transparency of economic data. The IMF’s Alternate Executive Director for Nigeria, Afolabi Olowookere, highlighted that better data and stronger domestic revenue mobilisation are essential to attract both domestic and foreign investment and to reduce reliance on external borrowing.
