Nigeria-IMF economic reform partnership

In late July 2026 Nigeria’s government repeatedly emphasized its ongoing collaboration with the International Monetary Fund. On 24 July, officials in Abuja celebrated the departure of IMF Resident Representative Dr Christian Ebeke, noting his role in supporting fiscal, debt‑management and foreign‑exchange reforms during a critical transition phase. At the same event the IMF urged Nigeria and other African states to improve macro‑economic stability, productivity and the transparency of economic data, arguing that better information and stronger domestic revenue mobilisation are essential for attracting investment and reducing reliance on external borrowing.

Two days later, on 26 July, Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele formally restated Nigeria’s commitment to deepening the partnership. He highlighted that the three‑year IMF programme coincided with major fiscal, revenue‑mobilisation, public‑debt and foreign‑exchange reforms aimed at restoring macro‑economic stability, strengthening public finances and boosting investor confidence. Oyedele praised Ebeke’s professionalism and said the technical support provided by the IMF would continue to guide Nigeria’s reform agenda, underscoring that the relationships built during the tenure will be leveraged for sustained cooperation.
