Nigeria reports $12.66 million electricity debt from Togo, Benin and Niger
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) first‑quarter 2026 report shows that the three neighbouring countries were billed $17.48 million for electricity supplied by Nigerian generation companies but paid only $4.82 million, leaving an outstanding debt of $12.66 million (27.57 % remittance). Payments received were $4.05 million from Benin’s Société Béninoise d’Énergie Électrique, $1.87 million from Niger’s Société Nigérienne d’Électricité and $0.72 million from Togo’s Compagnie Énergie Électrique du Togo. By contrast, domestic bilateral customers settled 95 % of their N6.12 billion invoices, paying N5.82 billion and an additional N2.59 billion for previous arrears. NERC recorded a collection efficiency of 78.95 % for distribution companies, slightly down from the prior quarter, and noted a federal electricity subsidy of ₦358.32 billion, representing 51.95 % of total generation invoices. The report also highlighted the continued non‑payment by Ajaokuta Steel Company Ltd., which owes over ₦866 million in electricity charges.
