Nigeria secures $2.5bn for CNG and electric vehicle infrastructure

The Nigerian Federal Government has secured approximately $2.5 billion in private-sector commitments to develop Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. This initiative aims to leverage the country's natural gas resources to provide sustainable alternatives to petrol and diesel, ultimately driving down public transportation fares.

To support this transition, the government has committed between N300 billion and N400 billion toward infrastructure, vehicle deployment, and subsidized conversion kits. The rollout of CNG stations has grown from fewer than 10 in 2023 to approximately 90 operational stations, with another 170 currently under development.

In Lagos, the Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicles has delivered 20 high-capacity CNG buses to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA). These units, which include IVM and TATA models, join an existing fleet of approximately 150 CNG buses in the region. The deployment is part of a broader effort to increase public transport capacity and reduce commuter costs.
