Nigeria seeks deeper Chinese investment for power sector projects
Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has concluded a series of high-level engagements in Beijing to secure deeper commitments from Chinese power engineering firms and financial institutions. The mission aims to accelerate the delivery of projects under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) and expand Chinese involvement across Nigeria’s electricity value chain, including generation, transmission, and hydropower.
During strategic meetings with Sinomach Group and China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC), Tegbe advocated for a transition from traditional engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts toward full-scope partnerships. This proposed model encourages Chinese companies to co-invest in infrastructure by providing capital, technology, and technical expertise.
The Minister also met with China National Electric Engineering Corporation (CNEEC) to advance cooperation on Nigeria’s transmission network, a critical area for reducing load-shedding and improving reliability for households and industries.
