Nigeria seeks private partnerships to address housing deficit

The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development is seeking private sector partnerships to address a national housing deficit estimated at approximately 15 million units over the next decade. During a meeting with a delegation from TEC Engineering Company (Nigeria) Ltd., a subsidiary of China Railway International Group, Permanent Secretary Dr. Shuaib Belgore expressed readiness to deepen engagement in large-scale housing development and urban renewal.

The government intends to utilize various methods to provide affordable homes, including direct construction, Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), and collaborations with private developers capable of high-volume delivery. Beyond housing, the urban renewal initiative aims to improve community living conditions by upgrading essential infrastructure such as roads, water supply, drainage, electricity, and healthcare facilities.

Dr. Belgore also acknowledged TEC Engineering’s ongoing work in Kano State involving the reconstruction of roads and covered conduits, noting that the ministry is working to address challenges related to budgetary release delays.
