Nigeria Shariah Council Urges Government to Act on Worsening Insecurity

The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria issued a statement demanding urgent and decisive federal action to curb a surge in killings, kidnappings, terrorism and banditry across the country. The council highlighted recent attacks in Borno, Oyo, Niger and Zamfara states and the abduction of a retired army general and his wife in Katsina, noting that more than 1,000 people were abducted in northern Nigeria during the first quarter of the year. It warned that many violent incidents go unreported, suggesting the true scale of the crisis may be higher than official figures.

The council criticised the government for repeated promises that have not produced tangible results and called for concrete measures such as improved intelligence gathering, modern technology, stronger inter‑agency collaboration, community participation and transparent management of security funds. While praising the sacrifices of security personnel, it urged stronger leadership, better coordination and accountability to protect citizens and restore public confidence.
