Nigeria signs National Peace Accord for 2027 elections

Political actors in Nigeria signed the National Peace Accord in Abuja on August 18, 2026. Facilitated by the National Peace Committee in partnership with The Kukah Centre, the agreement commits participants to peaceful, credible, free, and fair elections while rejecting violence and hate speech.

Despite the symbolic importance of the accord, concerns remain regarding the structural inequalities that could undermine the 2027 general elections. Risks include ‘electoral tilting,’ where administrative actions—such as denying opposition rally access, delaying campaign permits, or disproportionate state media coverage—may unfairly advantage incumbents and weaken the democratic process.
