Nigeria states receive N32bn Ecological Fund amid rising flood threats
Nigerian states received approximately N32 billion from the Ecological Fund during the first half of 2026, intended to mitigate environmental crises such as flooding, erosion, and desertification. Despite these monthly multi-billion naira allocations, investigations indicate that some sub-national governments have neglected flood control and prevention efforts.
The impact of flooding remains severe. Data from the National Emergency Management Agency shows that in 2025, flooding affected 272,890 people, resulting in 280 deaths and the displacement of over 108,000 individuals. Recent incidents in 2026 have seen fatalities and significant property damage, including the death of a student in Anambra State and the destruction of homes and farmlands in Ebonyi and Enugu States.
Agencies such as the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency have issued urgent warnings, advising vulnerable states to prioritize drainage clearance and emergency preparedness using their allocated ecological resources.
