South Africa defeats Nigeria to end Super Falcons' World Cup streak
South Africa's Banyana Banyana defeated Nigeria's Super Falcons 2-1 in a decisive CAF play-off match in Casablanca, Morocco, to secure a spot in the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup intercontinental play-offs. The result marks a historic turning point, as Nigeria will miss the Women's World Cup for the first time since the tournament's inception in 1991.
After a goalless first half, Thembi Kgatlana opened the scoring for South Africa in the 56th minute. Captain Refiloe Jane doubled the lead in the 77th minute, though she was subsequently sent off in stoppage time for a handball in the penalty area. Nigeria's Christy Ucheibe converted the resulting penalty in the 93rd minute, but South Africa held on to win.
Both teams reached the play-off after being eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). South Africa joins Ghana, who defeated Côte d'Ivoire 2-1, in the intercontinental qualifying phase for the tournament to be held in Brazil.
