Nigeria women's football 2026 – U‑17 WC, WAFCON & league
Overview
In late May 2026 the Nigeria U‑17 women’s side (the Flamingos) began travel and intensive training ahead of the second‑leg World Cup qualifier against Guinea. By early June they had completed the qualifier, beating Guinea 11‑0 on aggregate, and turned to a 15‑0 friendly win over a local academy as preparation for a final qualifying round against Benin. Simultaneously, the senior Super Falcons shifted focus to the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. On 2 June the team hosted Senegal for two friendlies, winning 2‑1 and then repeating the score on 6 June, followed by a 3‑0 victory on 8 June. The series highlighted depth in attack and defensive stability. In July the Flamingos secured their place at the 2026 FIFA U‑17 Women’s World Cup, overturning a 3‑2 first‑leg lead to beat Benin Republic 5‑3 in Lomé and win 8‑5 on aggregate, with Queen Joseph scoring a hat‑trick. Coach Akeem Busari praised the side’s attacking spirit as the qualification was officially confirmed on 10 July. The team will join the 24‑team tournament in Morocco from 17 October to 7 November 2026. Later that week the Super Falcons announced a 25‑player squad for WAFCON in Morocco, captained by Rasheedat Ajibade and featuring Chiamaka Nnadozie, Osinachi Ohale, Michelle Alozie, Jennifer Echegini and Asisat Oshoala; defender Ashleigh Plumptre missed the tournament after foot surgery. The 2026 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship launched on 6 July in Calabar, with six of eight clubs winning on opening day and setting a race for promotion to the Premiership. A feature ahead of WAFCON celebrated past Super Falcons legends such as Perpetua Nkwocha, Mercy Akide‑Udh, Florence Omagbemi and current star Asisat Oshoala. In mid‑July the Super Falcons began a training camp in Casablanca ahead of the expanded 16‑team WAFCON finals (26 July‑16 August).
