Nigeria targets lower CNG prices through increased adoption and reserves

The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV) and the Decade of Gas Secretariat have expressed confidence that the cost of compressed natural gas (CNG) could decrease as adoption grows. Tosin Coker, Chief Operating Officer of Pi-CNG & EV, stated that Nigeria’s abundant natural gas reserves allow the nation to control domestic pricing, potentially shielding consumers from global petroleum price volatility caused by geopolitical tensions.

To support this transition, the federal government has deployed 670 CNG buses across the country to reduce transportation costs. Officials emphasized the importance of safety through certified conversion centers, approved equipment, and regulatory compliance.

Recent data indicates Nigeria’s proven gas reserves increased from 208.83 trillion cubic feet in 2023 to 215.19 trillion cubic feet as of January 2026. Additionally, average gas production has risen to approximately 7.5 billion cubic feet per day, with domestic supply exceeding 2 billion cubic feet per day. The government has also secured $3.5 billion in committed investments for major gas projects, including the nearly completed AKK Gas Pipeline.
