Nigeria targets nutrition and agriculture reforms under Vice President Shettima and President Tinubu
Vice President Kashim Shettima instructed the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) to activate and strengthen Local Government Committees on Food and Nutrition, directing council chairmen to implement the Nutrition 774 (N‑774) Initiative across the country. He emphasized that functional local structures are essential for planning, coordination, implementation and accountability to improve nutritional outcomes for families and children.
Former presidential candidate Shitu Mohammed Kabir wrote an open letter to President Bola Tinubu urging the government to treat agriculture as a national‑security priority. Kabir called for special agricultural security zones, a National Commercial Agriculture Programme focused on mechanisation, irrigation, affordable financing, tax incentives and private‑sector participation, as well as commodity processing and agro‑industrial zones to reduce post‑harvest losses and create jobs. Both initiatives aim to boost food security, reduce imports and stimulate economic growth in Nigeria.
