Nigeria is implementing major educational reforms aimed at transitioning the nation from a resource-based to a knowledge-based economy. The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced a significant shift in agricultural training for tertiary institutions, moving from a model of 70 per cent theory and 30 per cent practical to one consisting of 80 per cent practical training and 20 per cent theory.

This curriculum overhaul is intended to equip Nigerian youths with hands-on competencies to drive economic growth and strengthen the agricultural sector. Alongside these reforms, the Federal Government is establishing 41 University Innovation Pods (UniPods) across various institutions. These pods are designed to transform academic research into marketable products, services, and jobs.

Several UniPods are already operational or nearing commissioning, including specialized centers for the Blue Economy, AgroTech, Resilience Tech, GovTech, and Industrial Tech. The initiative is being supported by the Federal Ministry of Education in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Tech4Dev.
