Nigeria educational and technical workforce reforms

Nigeria is undertaking educational and technical reforms to address labor market skill gaps and transition toward a knowledge-based economy. To combat a significant mismatch between academic training and employer needs, the government is implementing curriculum overhauls in tertiary institutions. This includes shifting agricultural training from a theory-heavy model to one consisting of “80 per cent practical training and 20 per cent theory.”

To foster innovation and commercialize research, the Federal Government is establishing 41 University Innovation Pods (UniPods) in partnership with the UNDP and Tech4Dev. These centers focus on sectors such as AgroTech, Blue Economy, and GovTech.

Complementing these efforts, the National Board for Technical Education is rolling out 31 National Occupational Standards to improve technical training. These initiatives follow previous regulatory actions, such as the revocation of licenses for 136 institutions that failed to meet educational requirements, as the country seeks to address high rates of informal employment.
