Nigeria transport fares to decrease amid CNG and EV expansion

The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV) has announced that nationwide transportation fares are expected to decrease starting October 1. This follows a stakeholders' meeting in Abuja aimed at reviewing the progress of implementing affordable clean mobility solutions.

Various Nigerian states are actively deploying CNG and electric infrastructure. Niger has procured 200 CNG buses, with 35 already in operation, and 11 charging stations. Abia has deployed 40 electric buses and plans to reach 100 by December. Ogun has acquired 1,500 electric motorcycles, while Cross River has deployed 720 electric vehicles. In Delta, 13 conversion centres and four CNG stations are operational.

In Sokoto, the Sokoto State Transport Authority (SSTA) has begun converting petrol-powered metropolitan vehicles to CNG to lower operational costs. The program initially targets 20 vehicles to maintain subsidized fares for residents. Additionally, the SSTA has procured seven new 18-seater buses to strengthen inter-state transport operations.
