Nigeria uncovers massive methamphetamine lab in Abidagba Forest

Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) seized an industrial‑scale methamphetamine production facility deep in the Abidagba Forest in the country’s southwest. The drugs and precursor chemicals seized were valued at roughly US$363 million. Ten suspects were arrested, three of whom were Mexican nationals.

Authorities say the lab could produce between 3,000 kg and 4,000 kg of meth per production cycle, a capacity comparable to large Mexican "super" laboratories. The discovery marks a shift from earlier urban and peri‑urban labs to a remote, poorly governed forest area, suggesting criminal syndicates are adapting to heightened counter‑narcotics pressure.

Analysts warn the development signals Nigeria’s transition from a transit hub to a significant producer and exporter of synthetic drugs, raising concerns about links to transnational criminal networks such as the Mexican Sinaloa Cartel. The emergence of large‑scale production in a region already facing rising Boko Haram‑related insecurity has prompted fears of a nexus between drug trafficking and terrorism.
