Nigeria urban centers face escalating waste management crises
Major urban centers in Nigeria are grappling with escalating waste management challenges. In Lokoja, residents have called for the Kogi State Ministry of Environment and Ecological Management to urgently designate public dumpsites. The lack of designated areas has led to refuse being dumped along key transportation corridors, including Lokongoma road and the Gadumo-Aniebo quarters road, tarnishing the city's image.
Simultaneously, Lagos is facing a renewed refuse crisis, with uncollected waste accumulating on roadsides and medians. In response to the pressure on the collection system, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu declared a “small state of emergency” on waste management. To address the issue, the Lagos State Government has ordered 160 new compactor trucks and plans to reopen more disposal facilities to ease the burden on the existing infrastructure.
