Waste management crises in Nigerian urban centers

Overview

Nigeria is experiencing escalating waste management challenges in major urban centers. In Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has declared a state of emergency on waste management, treating the issue as a critical infrastructure challenge. The state government has initiated plans to increase waste truck capacity, including the order of 160 new compactor trucks, and intends to activate new reception facilities and transfer loading stations in areas such as Alimosho, Ikorodu, Epe, and Badagry.

To address systemic issues, the state is restructuring the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and expanding dumpsite capacity. At the Olusosun dumpsite, current operations handle between 220 and 250 trucks daily; the government aims to increase this to between 350 and 450 trucks by expanding available tipping points. Alongside these infrastructure efforts, Lagos State Head of Service Olabode Agoro has called for increased civic responsibility, urging residents to adopt daily sanitation habits to reduce the spread of sickness and airborne diseases.

In Lokoja, residents have called for the Kogi State Ministry of Environment and Ecological Management to designate public dumpsites, as the absence of official areas has led to refuse being dumped along key transportation corridors. Meanwhile, in Lagos, uncollected waste continues to accumulate on roadsides and medians, prompting enforcement actions by LAWMA.
