Nigeria urges African nations to adopt digital procurement and AI for agribusiness supply chains

Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security called on African governments to adopt digital procurement, artificial intelligence, blockchain and smart logistics to modernise agribusiness supply chains. Permanent Secretary Dr Marcus Ogunbiyi made the appeal at the Africa Procurement and Supply Chain Summit and Awards 2026 in Lagos, stressing that weak logistics and transportation systems cause post‑harvest losses, lower farmer incomes and drive up food prices across the continent.

He urged investment in roads, railways, inland waterways, ports, cold‑chain facilities, warehouses and digital logistics platforms that link producers directly to markets. By expanding e‑procurement platforms, electronic contract management and data analytics, governments can improve transparency, reduce costs and boost food security while unlocking opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
