AfCFTA implementation advances in Africa

Overview

In late June 2026 African leaders moved from high‑level endorsement to concrete steps for the African Continental Free Trade Area. At the Biashara Afrika forum in Lomé officials discussed customs reforms, digital payment platforms, one‑stop border posts and visa‑free travel. Nigeria launched a pilot electronic Certificate of Origin, urged SMEs to use new e‑tariff tools and prepared a National Single Window, while Cabo Verde readied an Authorised Economic Operator programme and Angola validated a national AfCFTA strategy focused on diversifying its oil‑dominant economy and supporting women, youth and vulnerable groups. On 29 June Nigeria’s Industry, Trade and Investment Minister Jumoke Oduwole called for accelerated implementation, highlighting capacity‑building tours, a coordination office, interoperable payment systems, electronic cargo documentation and financing for women‑led firms, youth and MSMEs. A day later at a Digital Trade Forum she noted that only about five percent of Africa’s digitally delivered services are traded intra‑continent and pledged to co‑champion the AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol, a services directory and harmonised market‑entry guidelines. On 1 July Marine and Blue Economy Minister Adegboyega Oyetola urged a shift from policy formulation to implementation, citing recent port rankings (Tin Can Island Port 10th, Lagos Port 12th globally) and announcing new deep‑sea ports in Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Lagos and Ondo. He called for stronger West and Central African Port State Control under the Abuja MoU, linking maritime safety to AfCFTA, and President Bola Tinubu named Nigeria an AfCFTA Digital Trade Champion, emphasizing the National Single Window and the B’Odogwu platform. On 28 July the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security urged African governments to adopt digital procurement, AI, blockchain and smart logistics for agribusiness supply chains.
