Nigeria urges African Union to act on xenophobic attacks in South Africa
President Bola Tinubu has formally raised concerns regarding recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks against Africans and foreign nationals in South Africa before the African Union (AU). Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the AU Assembly in Luanda, Angola, Nigeria called for urgent collective action to protect the safety and dignity of African citizens.
Tinubu requested that the AU place this issue on the agenda for the 40th Ordinary Session of the Assembly, scheduled for January 2027. While acknowledging South Africa’s sovereign right to enforce its immigration laws, the Nigerian presidency emphasized that such violence undermines African solidarity, unity, and peaceful coexistence.
In addition to addressing xenophobia, Nigeria expressed support for the Luanda Action Plan, advocating for stronger African-led mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution. The Nigerian leadership argued that investing in preventive diplomacy and conflict anticipation is more cost-effective and sustainable than managing crises after they escalate.
